A new “leash” on life for dogs in Barbados? The Hope Sanctuary and SOJE/Lonsdale Communications Inc think that “man’s best
friends” are begging for it. To this end, they’re behind the new radio campaign running on Starcom network which features two
dogs, Cuddy and Buddy, gossiping via mobile phone about the lives of their fellow canines.
Aimed at educating Barbadians about dog welfare and presented in a humorous way to grab attention, the public service
messages are a direct response to the serious plight of the island’s dogs. SOJE’s creative director, Rachel Parker, who created
the campaign, says, “sadly, no one has to look too far to see neglected animals – and the hardcore cases seen by The Hope
Sanctuary add an even uglier dimension. Some of this is due to a lack of knowledge: hopefully this campaign will fill in some
gaps, raise public awareness, and help improve life for a lot of dogs out there.”
Thanks are due to the generous and public-spirited organisations and individuals who assisted in getting the campaign on air,
including Starcom Network, Alan Sheppard at BeezNeez, Kirk Goodman and Miguel White of Strategy – The Band, whose
dramatic talents brought Cuddy and Buddy to life, and The Hope Sanctuary’s own Jacqueline Ashby, who also lent her voice to
the commercials.
Cornelia Coulthurst of The Hope Sanctuary sees many appalling cases of dog neglect and abuse and endorses the need for
public education.
